In 1993, Sally Fox, a mother of two children with disabilities searched for a program in Jacksonville to provide a personalized and caring environment to assist in her daughters' development there
wasn't one. From this one woman's vision and hard work, Angelwood was born. That first program was a group home for 3 children, offering 24-hour-a-day supervision in a loving and secure setting.
While that loving touch is still our hallmark, Angelwood has grown over the years in both the kinds of services we offer and number of people coming to us for assistance.
Today, each Angelwood group home serves approximately five people and are community based. The people living with us participate in nearly all the same activities their neighbors enjoy. They go to school or work, go shopping, attend worship of their choice, enjoy movies and like to go out for meals. The difference is they need help to do those things.
This is where Angelwood excels. Whether it is helping a person with the shopping or personal care, our trained staff balances the need to assist while offering as much freedom as possible for each individual.
Caring for a child with a disability creates more stress than most typical families experience. To help these families, Angelwood now offers both residential and home-based respite for families who care for their child at home. Our goal is to re-energize families by providing a short break so they can resume the important role they have in their
child's life.
When behavioral needs arise, Angelwood is equipped to offer our expertise. With a Behavior Analyst, Angelwood can assess the causes of non-productive behaviors and find alternatives that work better for the individual and those around him or her.
The highlight of the year for many children throughout the city is Angelwood's Summer Day Camp. We accept children with developmental disabilities who may not qualify for other traditional programs. Whether doing arts & crafts, playing sports, singing or hiking, the campers are engaged in meaningful summer fun that keeps their bodies and minds healthy. In addition to the benefit to the campers, the summer day camp is often a job saver for parents who struggle to find quality, compassionate care for their child during the long summer weeks.
